Srinagar, Feb 18, KNT: The holy month of Ramadan will commence from Thursday after the crescent moon was sighted on Wednesday evening, marking the beginning of the sacred month of fasting for Muslims across Jammu and Kashmir.
Religious authorities confirmed the sighting of the crescent, following which announcements were made from mosques, and people exchanged greetings welcoming the blessed month.
Markets across Srinagar and other districts witnessed heavy rush throughout the day, with shoppers purchasing dates, dry fruits, essentials and traditional food items ahead of the first sehri. Major business hubs in downtown and civil lines areas remained abuzz late into the evening as traders reported brisk sales.
The administration said adequate arrangements have been put in place to ensure smooth observance of Ramadan. Officials stated that essential commodities are being supplied regularly and market checking drives have been intensified to prevent overpricing and hoarding. Special focus has been laid on availability of ration, electricity and drinking water during sehri and iftar hours.
Authorities further said that traffic regulation plans have been reviewed in view of increased movement during evening prayers, particularly around major mosques and shrines. Health and municipal departments have also been directed to maintain sanitation and hygiene standards in markets and public spaces.
Devotees will offer the first Taraweeh prayers tonight, with mosques across the Valley expected to witness large congregations.
The onset of Ramadan has ushered in a spiritual atmosphere across the region, with people expressing hope for peace, prosperity and communal harmony during the holy month. [KNT]
