Srinagar, Feb 1, KNT: Legislator from Langate Engineer Rashid launched a sharp attack on mainstream political leaders and the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, accusing them of failing to clear outstanding dues to the Power Development Department while preaching morality to the public.

Addressing a public gathering in Langate, Rashid alleged that senior politicians who enjoy official privileges and uninterrupted power supply are themselves major defaulters. He described it as unfortunate that in a region grappling with severe electricity shortages and prolonged power cuts, common consumers face disconnections for minor unpaid amounts, while influential individuals continue to evade payments without consequence.

Referring to a recent FIR lodged against villagers in Shanoo for allegedly pressuring authorities to repair a damaged transformer, the MLA questioned why similar legal action was not initiated against what he termed “real defaulters,” including owners of commercial complexes, industrialists, bureaucrats, politicians and security establishments. He accused authorities of targeting ordinary inhabitants while sparing the influential.

Rashid further said the government imposes financial burdens even on unemployed educated youth by charging fees for job application forms, yet fails to demonstrate accountability in clearing its own liabilities. He urged the Chief Minister, who also holds the power portfolio, to uphold ethical standards and ensure transparency in settling dues owed to the department.

The MLA also criticized the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board for extending the duration of the annual Amarnath Yatra by 18 days. He maintained that environmental experts and civil society groups had advocated reducing the duration to safeguard ecological balance. According to him, the prolonged Yatra adversely impacts environmental stability and disrupts functioning in key administrative departments.

He called upon the Shrine Board to reconsider its decision in the larger public interest. [KNT]
