New Delhi, March 28, KNT: Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the government led by Omar Abdullah, stating in Parliament that the administration in Jammu and Kashmir is “under trial” and failing to address pressing public concerns.
Raising the issue during a parliamentary session, Rashid flagged what he described as a deepening crisis at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), alleging administrative neglect and systemic mismanagement.
The remarks come amid growing concern over the functioning of the university, which serves as a key educational institution for the Pir Panjal region.
Rashid said the university is facing a severe administrative and academic crisis, pointing out that nearly 70 percent of staff positions remain vacant while key officials, including the Registrar, have been removed, leaving the institution in disarray.
“Funding to the university has been almost completely curtailed, severely impacting its functioning,” he said, adding that the careers of hundreds of students were at risk.
The MP criticized the Chief Minister, alleging that instead of addressing governance challenges, the administration was creating panic among the public. Referring to recent remarks regarding sealing of petrol pumps amid rush and shortages, he said such statements worsen public anxiety rather than resolving issues.
Rashid also raised broader concerns over shortages of essential commodities, including ration and cooking gas, and termed the government’s response as insensitive to public grievances.
Calling for intervention, he urged the Union Government, particularly the Education Ministry, to order an immediate inquiry into the functioning of BGSBU and constitute a committee to examine what he described as a “deliberate attempt” to weaken the institution.
He further reiterated the demand for allowing student unions in universities across Jammu and Kashmir, stating that democratic space for students is essential for academic growth and accountability. [KNT]
