“Nazrana Tumbaknari – The Folk Rhythm of Kashmir”

Hotelier by Profession, drummer, and Author Prashant Sharma has announced his book “Nazrana Tumbaknari – The Folk Rhythm of Kashmir,” expected to be released by October this year, a work dedicated to exploring one of Kashmir’s distinctive traditional percussion instruments and its deep connection with the Valley’s folk traditions, cultural life and collective memory.

The book goes beyond the instrument itself to explore the sounds, stories, musicians, traditions and social occasions associated with Tumbaknari. Through this work, Sharma seeks to document an important part of Kashmir’s intangible cultural heritage and draw greater attention to a musical tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Preserving a Living Musical Heritage

Tumbaknari is a traditional percussion instrument associated with Kashmir’s folk musical traditions. Its distinctive rhythm has traditionally accompanied social gatherings, celebrations and folk performances.

For Sharma, the instrument represents much more than music.

Sharma believes that documenting such traditions is particularly important for younger generations.
