Fish Production Touches 29.40 Thousand MT in 2024-25, Govt Plans Major Expansion

Jammu, Feb 13, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has said that the fisheries sector has recorded a fish production of 29.40 thousand metric tonnes during 2024-25, with an additional 20.68 thousand metric tonnes produced up to November 2025.
The government said that trout farming has made a significant contribution to the overall output, reflecting steady growth in cold-water fisheries across the Union Territory.
The administration outlined an ambitious roadmap to double fish production in the coming years. The strategy includes modernization of existing hatcheries and adoption of advanced aquaculture technologies such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems and Bio-floc systems to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
The government said the proposed technological interventions are expected to improve productivity, reduce water consumption and enable year-round fish farming. The government also emphasized strengthening post-harvest management infrastructure to minimize losses and improve quality standards.
The expansion plan is aimed at boosting income opportunities for fish farmers, enhancing nutritional security and promoting fisheries exports from Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities expressed confidence that the sector would play a greater role in rural livelihood generation and economic diversification. [KNT]
