Omar Abdullah Inaugurates ₹25-Crore Projects in Beerwah, Promises Push for Local Development
Beerwah, Oct 23, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday inaugurated development works worth around ₹25 crore and laid foundation stones for five projects in Beerwah constituency of central Kashmir’s Budgam district, saying he remained indebted to the people for the support they extended to him in the 2014 Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters during his visit, Omar said his focus was on addressing local development needs and ensuring that pending works were completed. Recalling his association with Beerwah, he said voters had done him a favour in 2014 and that he had promised to remain indebted to them. “I will keep working to repay that favour,” he said.
Among the key works was the reconstruction of a bridge over Nallah Sukhnaat, a long-standing demand of residents. Omar said the bridge had been handed over to the public and thanked the Deputy Chief Minister and officials for expediting the work. The government has also initiated beautification along the river, including a walking track and decks on its banks, while ₹4 crore has been earmarked for the construction and improvement of lanes and drains in the constituency.
Addressing concerns over electricity infrastructure, the Chief Minister acknowledged complaints about the existing receiving station and said the foundation stone for a new facility had been laid. He said the station was expected to become functional within four to five months. He also announced a transformer repair workshop for the area, saying the facility would help address recurring winter difficulties when damaged transformers have to be transported elsewhere for repairs.
Omar said the government would prioritise pending development works and, responding to a demand for a stadium, said a suitable site would be identified for the Sports Department to take up the project. He also addressed concerns over the national highway passing through Beerwah town centre, acknowledging residents’ apprehensions that diverting traffic away from the town could affect local businesses. He said the matter had been taken up with highway authorities and efforts would be made to address local concerns.
The Chief Minister declined to comment on questions concerning a possible Cabinet expansion and other political issues, saying he would focus on Beerwah’s development and road-related concerns. [KNT]
