Omar Backs Bhagwat’s Remarks on Student Protests, Says Criticizing Government Is Not Anti-National
Jammu, August 7, KNT: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday endorsed remarks made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat distinguishing criticism of the government from opposition to the nation, saying democratic dissent should not be equated with anti-national activity.
Talking to reporters in Jammu, Omar said Bhagwat had stated nothing that was untrue and observed that the student protests were centred on demands for rights and entitlements rather than being directed against the country.
He said opposing a government or its policies was fundamentally different from opposing the nation, adding that criticism of those in power often serves the larger national interest by helping correct mistakes. Omar expressed hope that, in the wake of Bhagwat’s remarks, action initiated against the protesting students would come to an end.
Referring to the ongoing agitation by JPSC and JSSC aspirants in Jharkhand, the Chief Minister urged the state government to engage with the protesters instead of ignoring their demands.
“I hope Hemant Soren will listen to these young people. They should be invited for talks and their concerns addressed,” Omar said.
The Chief Minister’s remarks came in response to questions from reporters about Mohan Bhagwat’s comments during an event on student protests and democratic dissent. [KNT]
