Pakistan’s semi-final hopes in the T20 World Cup have received an unexpected lifeline following England’s dramatic victory over New Zealand. With the Black Caps falling short in a match they had largely controlled, the group table has opened up, offering Pakistan a mathematical chance to qualify.
New Zealand had appeared on course for victory before England’s Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed turned the contest around with a late surge. That defeat has prevented New Zealand from consolidating their position, keeping the qualification race alive.
For Pakistan, however, the path to the semi-finals is narrow and demanding.
They face Sri Lanka on Saturday and must secure a massive win to overhaul the net run rate deficit. If batting first, Pakistan need to defeat Sri Lanka by a margin of at least 65 runs. If chasing, they must complete the target within 13 overs to boost their net run rate sufficiently.
Given Pakistan’s inconsistent performances in the tournament so far, the challenge appears formidable. Their batting has lacked fluency at crucial moments and the bowling unit has struggled to close out tight games. Such a steep qualification equation adds further pressure.
Yet, as often said in cricket, momentum can shift quickly. A dominant all-round display against Sri Lanka could dramatically alter the standings and silence doubts.
For now, Pakistan remain dependent on both performance and precision. The margin for error is gone, and only an emphatic victory will keep their World Cup journey alive. [KNT]
