Srinagar, April 2, KNT: Member of Parliament and National Conference leader Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Thursday criticised Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary over his conduct in the Assembly, saying it was inappropriate during a sensitive discussion on reservation.
The remarks come amid an ongoing debate in Jammu and Kashmir over the proposed reservation framework, which has triggered concern among sections of students and political representatives, particularly regarding its impact on open merit.
“It is disheartening to witness the Deputy Chief Minister openly mocking his own party colleague, MLA Dr Bashir Ahmad Veeri, during an emotional moment in the Assembly,” Ruhullah said.
He said the issue of the reservation bill goes beyond politics and reflects wider public concern.
“When Dr Bashir Veeri expressed his emotions, it reflected the seriousness of the issue and the sentiments of many people he represents,” he said.
Ruhullah said those holding constitutional positions are expected to maintain restraint in public conduct.
“For someone in such a high office to respond with mockery instead of empathy is disappointing. Leadership demands restraint, respect and responsibility,” he said.
He also questioned whether such conduct aligns with expected standards of political behaviour. [KNT]
