SMC Orders Gazetted Officers to Adopt Home Composting, Links Salary to Compliance

Srinagar, Oct 6: KNT: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation has directed all its Gazetted Officers to adopt and practise home composting at their respective residences, submitting geotagged photographs and compliance with the order a condition for release of their salary for the current month.
The directive has been issued under Order No. 1158 of 2026 dated October 6, as part of the Corporation’s effort to promote source-level management of biodegradable waste, encourage decentralised processing of wet waste and reduce the quantity of waste transported to municipal processing facilities.
Under the order, Gazetted Officers have been directed to ensure segregation of biodegradable or wet waste generated at their residences and process it through an appropriate home-composting method. The composting facility or activity is required to be maintained regularly in functional condition rather than treated as a one-time compliance exercise.
The officers have been given 10 days from the date of issuance of the order to submit geotagged photographs of their home-composting facility or activity to the concerned Zonal Officer or Sectional Head. The concerned officers will maintain records of compliance and submit a consolidated report to the Municipal Commissioner within the prescribed period.
The SMC said the initiative is intended to promote waste management at source, with senior officers expected to demonstrate the practical benefits of decentralised waste management. The order has come into force with immediate effect. [KNT]
