Ganderbal, March 29, KNT: Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Ladakh has led to the closure of Zojila Pass, forcing authorities to suspend traffic on the Srinagar–Leh National Highway (NH-1) on Sunday, officials said.

The shutdown has disrupted the crucial road link between Kashmir and Ladakh, affecting the movement of vehicles and supplies along the strategic corridor.

The closure comes amid a fresh weather system impacting the region, bringing snowfall to high-altitude areas and rainfall in lower plains.

Officials said snow accumulation at Zojila made the road unsafe for vehicular movement, prompting a precautionary suspension of traffic.

“No movement is being allowed from either side due to slippery conditions and accumulation of snow,” an official said.

Teams from the Border Roads Organization have been deployed to clear snow and restore connectivity at the earliest, they added.

The Zojila Pass, situated at an altitude of over 11,500 feet, remains one of the most vulnerable stretches during adverse weather, often witnessing frequent closures due to snowfall and avalanches.

Commuters and transporters have been advised to avoid travel on the route until conditions improve and clearance operations are completed.

Locals said sudden weather changes have once again impacted connectivity, with the highway serving as a lifeline for Ladakh.

“It becomes very difficult when the road closes. Supplies and travel both get affected,” said a driver stranded near Sonamarg.

Authorities said efforts are underway to reopen the highway, subject to weather conditions. [KNT]
