Solar sector flags policy uncertainty in J&K, seeks urgent government intervention

Jammu, April 28, KNT: Solar vendors in Jammu and Kashmir have flagged policy uncertainty and operational challenges, warning that unresolved issues could slow sector growth and impact consumers, particularly those from economically weaker sections.
The concerns were raised by the Jammu and Kashmir Solar Association during an interaction with senior Power Development Department officials at the Civil Secretariat in Jammu.
The delegation met Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary) Ashwani Kumar and Special Secretary Mohammad Younis Malik, submitting a detailed memorandum outlining challenges faced by vendors across the Union Territory.
According to the association, the absence of policy clarity and procedural consistency is affecting the smooth functioning of the solar sector and could undermine ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy adoption.
Members said that delays and unresolved concerns not only affect vendors but also have a direct bearing on consumers who rely on solar solutions as a cost-effective alternative.
Key Concerns Raised by Solar Vendors
• Lack of policy clarity affecting sector stability
• Procedural issues impacting smooth operations of vendors
• Delays and unresolved matters hindering sectoral growth
• Risk of negative impact on consumers, especially economically weaker sections
• Need for transparency in processes and decision-making
• Demand for a stable and predictable regulatory framework
• Call for immediate government intervention to address pending issues
The association urged the government to take immediate steps to ensure transparency, streamline processes, and provide a stable policy framework to support long-term sectoral growth.
It also assured authorities of its cooperation in advancing government plans aimed at promoting solar energy and benefiting consumers across Jammu and Kashmir.
Responding to the issues, Ashwani Kumar said all legitimate concerns would be addressed on priority and reiterated the administration’s commitment to strengthening the renewable energy sector in the Union Territory.
The interaction comes at a time when solar adoption is being positioned as a key component of the region’s energy transition, with stakeholders seeking clearer policy direction to sustain momentum. [KNT]
