Sonamarg Tourism Authority Enforces NGT Waste Disposal Rules
Ganderbal, Feb 26, KNT: The Tourism Development Authority, Sonamarg has issued a circular mandating strict compliance with National Green Tribunal directions and Solid Waste Management Rules regarding garbage disposal within its jurisdiction.
The circular, issued in continuation of previous correspondence and NGT directives, states that improper dumping of municipal solid waste, littering along roads, open spaces, water bodies and tourist destinations constitute clear violations of environmental laws including the Solid Waste Management Rules, Plastic Waste Management Rules and the Environment Protection Act.
All hoteliers, guest house owners, restaurant operators, shopkeepers, villagers, pony owners, tent operators, tour operators, outsourced agencies and line departments have been directed to ensure mandatory four-way segregation of waste at source into wet, dry, domestic hazardous and sanitary waste. Mixing of waste has been strictly prohibited.
The order bars dumping of garbage on roadsides, drains, forests, riverbanks and public places. Burning of solid or plastic waste has also been prohibited. Establishments have been instructed to hand over segregated waste only to the authorised agency for transportation to the Sarbal Solid Waste Management Plant. Disposal at any unauthorised site has been banned.
The circular further directs installation of adequate covered dustbins within and outside premises and prohibits stocking and distribution of banned single-use plastic items. Continuous monitoring and enforcement drives will be carried out to ensure compliance.
It warns that any negligence or violation will invite strict action under relevant laws, including environmental compensation, spot penalties, sealing of premises, cancellation of registration and initiation of legal proceedings.
The circular has come into force with immediate effect. [KNT]
