Jammu, Feb 18, KNT: Students on Wednesday staged a protest in Jammu demanding establishment of a National Law University in the region, with police detaining several demonstrators after they attempted to march towards the Legislative Assembly.

The protest began from the campus of Jammu University, where students assembled and raised slogans seeking early approval for setting up an NLU in Jammu and Kashmir. They argued that the absence of a premier national-level law institution in the Union Territory compels aspiring law students to seek admissions outside the region.

As the protesters attempted to move towards the Assembly complex, police intervened and stopped the march, citing security restrictions in view of the ongoing session. Several students were detained and shifted to a nearby police station to prevent further escalation.

Witnesses said the situation remained tense for some time before authorities dispersed the gathering. Later, some BJP MLAs reached the police station and intervened to ensure the release of certain detained students.

The students maintained that their demand is focused on strengthening legal education infrastructure in the Union Territory and urged the government to expedite steps for establishment of a National Law University. [KNT]
