‘Ecology, Equity and Economy Must Drive Tourism Growth,’ Says Omar Abdullah

Srinagar, July 9, KNT: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday inaugurated the conclave on “Sustainable Tourism Planning: Designing Tourism for Tomorrow” at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) and called for a shift towards a sustainable, scientific and community-centric tourism model across the Union Territory.
Addressing the conclave, the Chief Minister said Jammu and Kashmir must transition from conventional tourism practices to a long-term, evidence-based and environmentally responsible model that balances growth with ecological preservation and community welfare.
Emphasising the importance of sustainable development, Omar Abdullah said the government’s tourism planning would be guided by the 3E framework—Ecology, Equity and Economy.
He said the framework would shape the planning and development of priority tourist destinations across Jammu and Kashmir and lay the foundation for a resilient, responsible and future-ready tourism sector.
The Chief Minister underscored the need to protect the region’s fragile environment while ensuring that local communities remain active stakeholders and beneficiaries of tourism-led development.
The conclave brought together policymakers, tourism experts, planners and other stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for promoting sustainable tourism and preserving Jammu and Kashmir’s rich natural and cultural heritage. [KNT]
