Early trends from the Tamil Nadu Assembly election counting on Monday indicated the emergence of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a newly formed political party led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, as a notable player in a multi-cornered contest, even as established Dravidian parties maintained their presence in early leads.
The counting of votes, which began at 8 a.m. under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, showed early leads favoring the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), while TVK’s performance drew attention for its impact on vote distribution across constituencies.
The election marks one of the first major electoral outings for TVK, founded in 2024 by Vijay, who commands a significant following among youth and cinema audiences in the state. Early trends suggested that the party was not only registering presence in multiple seats but also influencing margins in closely contested constituencies.
Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has traditionally been dominated by the DMK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). However, the entry of TVK has introduced a new dynamic, with analysts closely watching whether it can consolidate its support base into electoral gains.
Initial rounds of counting indicated that while DMK maintained an edge in several constituencies, the presence of TVK candidates was contributing to a fragmented vote share in select regions, potentially affecting the outcomes in tight races. However, at present Vijay’s party is leading on 102 seats while DMK is even behind AIDMK.
Political observers noted that new entrants often face organizational challenges in translating popularity into votes, but early trends pointed to TVK’s ability to mobilize support, particularly among younger voters.
Current leads: TVK 102, AIDMK 80, DMK 52
