Washington, Feb 13, KNT: US President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran over its nuclear programme could stretch for about a month, while expressing hope that an agreement would be reached sooner.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said discussions should move quickly and indicated that Tehran should agree without delay. He warned that failure to secure a deal would have serious consequences for Iran.
The remarks came a day after Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. According to Trump, the meeting was productive and both sides agreed to maintain close coordination. Netanyahu reportedly raised Israel’s security concerns, including Iran’s support for regional groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen, as well as Tehran’s ballistic missile programme.
Trump said the Israeli leader did not urge him to halt negotiations with Iran and appeared to understand Washington’s diplomatic approach.
The US president has recently increased military deployments near Iran, including warships and fighter aircraft, while keeping diplomatic channels open. Talks between US and Iranian officials began in Oman last week.
Trump has given varying signals about the scope of a potential agreement. While earlier statements suggested a broader regional framework, he recently indicated that a deal focused solely on nuclear issues could be acceptable.
Diplomatic observers say the coming weeks will determine whether negotiations produce a limited nuclear accord or expand to address wider security concerns in the region. [KNT]
