Two Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon have killed three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) over the past 48 hours, officials said.

The incidents mark a serious escalation involving UN personnel amid ongoing cross-border tensions between Israel and armed groups in southern Lebanon.

The development is significant as it raises concerns over the safety of international peacekeepers deployed in conflict zones and could trigger diplomatic repercussions.

United Nations officials confirmed the deaths and strongly condemned the attacks, calling for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

Indonesia, which contributes troops to the UN peacekeeping mission, also condemned the killings and demanded accountability.

Officials said the peacekeepers were deployed as part of UNIFIL, which monitors the cessation of hostilities along the Israel-Lebanon border.

Details regarding the exact locations and nature of the strikes were not immediately disclosed.

UN Peacekeeping Force — Key Facts

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force refers to military, police and civilian personnel deployed by the United Nations to help maintain peace and security in conflict zones.

Peacekeeping missions operate under mandates approved by the UN Security Council and are tasked with monitoring ceasefires, protecting civilians, supporting humanitarian assistance, and helping implement peace agreements.

UN peacekeepers are commonly known as “Blue Helmets” due to their distinctive headgear and serve in some of the world’s most volatile regions.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), established in 1978, is one such mission deployed along the Israel-Lebanon border to monitor hostilities and support stability in the area.

Peacekeeping troops are contributed voluntarily by member states, with countries like India, Bangladesh and Indonesia among the largest contributors.

Peacekeepers are generally not combat forces and are expected to remain neutral, using force only in self-defence or to protect civilians under imminent threat.

As of recent years, tens of thousands of personnel are deployed across multiple missions worldwide, reflecting the UN’s central role in conflict management and peacebuilding.

There was no immediate response from Israeli authorities on the allegations.

The UN reiterated the need for all parties to respect the safety and neutrality of peacekeeping forces operating under its mandate.

The killings come amid heightened hostilities in southern Lebanon, where exchanges of fire have increased in recent weeks.

UNIFIL has long operated in the region to maintain stability and prevent escalation along the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon.

Indonesia has been one of the largest contributors to the UNIFIL mission, with hundreds of troops deployed in the area.

Analysts say attacks involving UN personnel could increase international pressure for restraint and adherence to international humanitarian law.
