Srinagar-Jammu Highway to Remain Closed for Traffic Tomorrow
Udhampur, July 30, KNT: The District Magistrate, Udhampur, on Thursday ordered the complete suspension of traffic on the Udhampur–Chenani section of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) for July 31 to facilitate intensive slope stabilisation and restoration works near Ladha and Samroli.
The order said the decision was taken following persistent rainfall since July 18, which triggered repeated landslides, mudslides and continuous shooting stones, rendering the affected stretch vulnerable and unsafe for vehicular movement.
Although two-way traffic had been restored after increased efforts in recent days, the administration said the unstable hillside continued to pose a serious threat. Permanent stabilisation requires the deployment of heavy machinery for removal of loose overhanging debris, a task that cannot be carried out safely while traffic is allowed on the highway.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Project Implementation Unit, Ramban, has been directed to complete the restoration works on a war footing by deploying adequate manpower, machinery and equipment, while ensuring proper warning signs, barricading and other safety measures at vulnerable locations.
The District Magistrate also directed police and traffic authorities to enforce traffic restrictions, make necessary diversion arrangements and give wide publicity to the temporary closure through print, electronic and social media so that commuters can plan their journeys accordingly.
Emergency response teams, ambulances and disaster management personnel have also been asked to remain on standby throughout the operation. [KNT]
