Srinagar, Aug 28, KNT: National Conference Lok Sabha member Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has said that he will resign from Parliament and give up the primary membership of the National Conference on November 3, the 26th death anniversary of his father, Aga Syed Mehdi.
Ruhullah’s announcement comes in response to National Conference president Farooq Abdullah’s recent challenge asking him to resign as an MP and seek a fresh mandate from the people if he believed he had won the Lok Sabha election on his own support base.
Ruhullah said he would respect Farooq Abdullah’s words and act accordingly, choosing November 3, the death anniversary of his father, for both resignations.
The development could further deepen the differences between Ruhullah and the National Conference leadership, which have become increasingly public in recent days.
Farooq Abdullah had also criticised Ruhullah over his political positions and said that if the MP believed in the restoration of Article 370, he should raise the issue in Parliament.
Ruhullah’s decision to set a date for resigning from both Parliament and the party now sets the stage for a potentially significant political development within the National Conference. [KNT]
