Israel Election Produces No Clear Winner as Netanyahu’s Likud Leads Partial Count

Israel’s national election has produced no clear winner, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party leading the partial vote count while neither his political bloc nor the opposition has secured the parliamentary majority required to form a government.

With more than 66 per cent of ballots counted, figures reported by Israeli media placed Netanyahu’s bloc at 56 seats and the bloc led by opposition figure Gadi Eisenkot at 48. Arab parties were projected to hold 16 seats, leaving the political contest unresolved.

A party or alliance needs at least 61 seats in the 120-member Knesset to command a majority. The partial results remain subject to change as the counting of remaining ballots continues.

Likud emerged as the largest single party in the early count, ahead of Eisenkot’s Yashar party. However, the party’s lead has not translated into a clear parliamentary majority for Netanyahu’s coalition.

The outcome sets the stage for potentially prolonged negotiations among political parties to assemble a governing coalition. Arab-led parties could play a significant role in the post-election arithmetic, although their participation in any government remains uncertain.

Netanyahu remains caretaker prime minister while the final results are awaited. Once the official count is completed, President Isaac Herzog will consult political representatives and select the candidate considered best placed to form the next government.
