The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis has accused the Iran-aligned group of carrying out a drone attack on an electricity distribution station in Madinah that supplies power to the Prophet’s Mosque, saying one transformer was knocked out of service but the wider electricity network remained unaffected.

Coalition spokesman Major General Turki Al-Maliki said the attack targeted the Taibah power distribution station during pre-dawn hours.

According to the coalition, an investigation by the competent authorities, including an operational review and examination of debris from the drone, established that the Houthis were involved in planning and carrying out the attack.

The strike caused one transformer at the facility to go out of service, but did not disrupt the overall electricity network, the coalition said.

Al-Maliki described the facility as a civilian power station providing electricity services to the Prophet’s Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, and said the attack was part of what the coalition described as repeated attempts by the Houthis to target the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah.

The Houthis have denied the accusation. A Houthi military source quoted by the Houthi-run Saba news agency called the Saudi claim a “lie” and said it was intended to cover up what the source described as Saudi Arabia’s failure to substantiate an earlier allegation that the group had targeted Makkah.

The latest incident comes amid a sharp escalation in fighting between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis after years of relative calm following the 2022 UN-brokered truce. The coalition has also reported intercepting Houthi drones and ballistic missiles targeting areas in southern Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi coalition said it would continue taking measures to protect the Two Holy Mosques and ensure the safety of pilgrims and visitors.
