Mehbooba Calls Tehran a Friend Who Stood With India During Sanctions

Srinagar, Mar 4, KNT: Peoples Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said India’s silence over the US-Israel aggression against Iran was “incomprehensible”, asserting that Tehran had stood by New Delhi during difficult times, including when sanctions were imposed on India following its nuclear tests.
Addressing reporters in Srinagar, the former chief minister said she was surprised that neither the national leadership nor political leadership in Jammu and Kashmir had condemned the attacks or expressed condolences to the people of Iran. She said India and Iran have historically maintained strong relations and recalled that Iran was among the few countries that supported India when many Muslim nations sided with Pakistan on the Kashmir issue.
Mufti said Iran had supplied oil to India during the period of sanctions and allowed deferred payments, describing it as a gesture of friendship. She also criticised what she termed as global silence over the conflict and expressed solidarity with the people of Iran.
The PDP leader said they burnt effigies of US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to register protest and convey a message that people of Kashmir stand with Iran in the present crisis. She also demanded the release of people detained during protests in the Valley and sought withdrawal of FIRs registered against Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu.
Mufti further appealed to people to maintain peace while expressing their views over the developments in the Middle East. [KNT]
