Baramulla, May 2, KNT: Judicial Magistrate First Class Boniyar in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has issued an order directing lawyers not to address him as “Your Lordship,” “My Lord,” or “Your Honor,” and instead use the word “Sir” while addressing the court.

The directive aims to standardize the manner in which advocates address the presiding officer in the courtroom and avoid the use of expressions that the magistrate described as having divine connotations.

The order was issued by Judicial Magistrate First Class Boniyar Shahber Ayaz.

In the order, the magistrate stated that expressions such as “Your Lordship,” “My Lord,” and “Your Honor” are of divine nature and should not be used while addressing the court.

“It is hereby for the information of all lawyers that they may not address me as ‘Your Lordship’, ‘My Lord’ or ‘Your Honor’, as such words are of divine nature and belong to the Lord only,” the order read.

The magistrate further directed members of the Bar to instead use the word “Sir” when addressing the court during proceedings.

“Therefore, lawyers are directed to rather use the word ‘Sir’ in place of such words. This order may be strictly followed,” the order stated.

The directive has been circulated for the information of advocates appearing before the court at Boniyar in Baramulla district. [KNT]
