The King and the Two Travellers

Persian Folktale

NEWS AGENCY KASHMIR NEWS TRUST #KNT

Once upon a time, a king loved to walk among his people in disguise to understand their true nature.

One evening, he met two travellers resting under a tree. He sat with them and began talking as an ordinary man.

After some time, he asked them:

“Tell me, what do you think of your king?”

🧍 The First Traveller

The first traveller spoke angrily:

“The king is greedy and unjust. He taxes people heavily and lives in luxury while we suffer.”

The king listened quietly.

🧍 The Second Traveller

Then the king turned to the second traveller.

He said calmly:

“The king may have his faults, but ruling a kingdom is not easy. Perhaps he does what he thinks is right.”

👑 The Revelation

The next day, both travellers were summoned to the royal court.

They were shocked to see the same man sitting on the throne.

It was the king.

⚖️ The Judgment

The king said:

“You both spoke your minds freely. Now I will reward you accordingly.”

To the first traveller, he gave a bag full of gold coins.

To the second traveller, he gave only a small gift of food.

Everyone in the court was surprised.

🤔 The Twist

The ministers asked:

“Why reward the man who insulted you more?”

The king replied wisely:

“The first man spoke out of bitterness — he needs wealth to ease his suffering.”

“But the second man is already content and wise. He needs nothing more.”

✨ Moral:

  • A ruler must understand people beyond their words

  • Bitterness often comes from suffering

  • True wisdom lies in contentment
