US: Blast at Port Arthur Refinery Sends Black Smoke Skyward, Emergency Crews Deployed
A loud explosion was reported at a refinery operated by Valero Energy in Port Arthur, Texas, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
The blast, reported earlier in the day, sent thick plumes of black smoke into the sky, with videos circulating online capturing the sound of a powerful explosion moments before flames were seen rising from the refinery site.
The incident has triggered safety protocols in the surrounding area, with officials urging residents to remain indoors as a precaution while the situation is assessed.
Eyewitnesses told local media that the explosion shook nearby homes. “There was a loud blast, and then we saw flames and heavy smoke coming from the refinery,” one resident said.

Antonio Mitchell, an official with the Port Arthur Fire Department, said initial response teams were still en route at the time of the first reports and that the nature of the incident was not immediately clear.
“We don’t have units at the scene currently; they’re en route. The type of incident is unknown at this time,” Mitchell said.
Emergency responders, including fire crews and hazardous materials teams, have since been deployed to contain the situation. Officials confirmed that it remains an active incident but have not yet released detailed information on the cause or extent of the damage.
Authorities said no injuries have been reported so far, and there has been no immediate order for evacuations.
Officials also said air quality monitoring is underway to determine whether any toxic substances have been released into the surrounding environment. The shelter-in-place order will remain in effect until it is deemed safe for residents to resume normal activities.

The Texas Department of Transportation has advised motorists to avoid State Highways 87 and 82 near the refinery to facilitate emergency response operations and reduce congestion in the area.
Officials said further updates would be provided as more information becomes available, including findings related to containment efforts, environmental impact and the possible cause of the explosion.
Industrial incidents at refineries, while relatively infrequent, can pose significant risks due to the presence of flammable materials and complex processing systems.
