Jammu, March 27, KNT: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Friday staged a protest in Jammu demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in the region, with police erecting barricades to prevent the demonstration from advancing towards sensitive areas.
The protest saw BJP workers gathering in parts of Jammu and raising slogans in support of the NLU demand, which has gained traction in recent days amid student-led demonstrations.
The development reflects a widening of the agitation, with political mobilization now extending beyond student groups to grassroots party workers, increasing pressure on the government to respond.
Officials said police had deployed personnel and erected barricades at key locations, particularly along routes leading to high-security zones, to regulate movement and maintain law and order.
Protesters attempted to move towards restricted areas but were stopped by barricades, officials added.
The demand for a National Law University in Jammu has been raised repeatedly by students and civil society groups, who argue that the region lacks access to premier legal education institutions.
BJP workers said the protest was aimed at amplifying student concerns and pressing the government to take concrete steps.
The issue has also been raised inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, where BJP legislators have sought a formal response from the government.
National Law Universities across India are regarded as top institutions for legal studies, with admission through competitive national-level examinations. [KNT]
