Jammu, March 31, KNT: Amid concerns raised by several legislators over reduction or withdrawal of security cover, Peoples Democratic Party MLA from Tral, Rafiq Naik, on Tuesday advised lawmakers to focus on public service and place faith in God rather than relying solely on security arrangements.
Speaking during discussions, Naik said politicians are elected to serve the people and should not be overly dependent on personal security.
“Do good work and trust in Allah. We are here for the people. Even if something happens, we will be remembered for our work,” Naik said.
The remarks come as multiple legislators have alleged that their security cover has either been curtailed or withdrawn, raising concerns within the Assembly.
The issue is significant given the security sensitivities in Jammu and Kashmir, where elected representatives have historically been provided protection based on threat perception.
Naik, while addressing the concerns, cited past incidents to underline his point, referring to the killing of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh inside the Secretariat.
“Look what happened to Beant Singh. He was killed inside the Secretariat,” Naik said, suggesting that security arrangements alone cannot guarantee safety.
Other legislators, however, expressed concern over reported reductions in security, saying such measures could expose public representatives to risks. [KNT]
