New Delhi, April 24, KNT: A major political development unfolded on Friday as Raghav Chadha said more than two-thirds of the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Rajya Sabha members have formally broken away from the party, with several MPs indicating their intention to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Chadha said a signed communication has been submitted to the Rajya Sabha Chairman, asserting that the required numerical threshold for a split or merger under parliamentary provisions has been met. AAP currently has 10 members in the Upper House, and reports indicate that around seven MPs are part of the move.

The development, if fully recognized under parliamentary rules, could significantly alter AAP’s strength in the Rajya Sabha and mark one of the most serious internal ruptures in the party’s parliamentary wing.

Chadha, who is among those leading the move, said the decision reflects a collective position taken by a majority of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs. He also indicated that the group intends to align with the BJP, signaling a shift with wider political implications.

Names of several MPs have surfaced in connection with the development, including Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikram Sahney, Swati Maliwal, Sandeep Pathak, and Ashok Mittal. However, the complete and officially confirmed list of members involved in the split was not immediately available, and formal recognition processes are still underway.

The move comes amid an evolving political context within AAP, and its potential impact extends beyond party dynamics to parliamentary arithmetic, where numbers play a crucial role in legislative proceedings.

No immediate official response was available from AAP leadership at the time of filing this report.

The situation remains fluid, with further clarity expected as parliamentary authorities examine the submissions and determine the status of the claimed split. [KNT]
