India Rebukes ‘Hellhole’ Remark Circulated by Trump, Calls It Uninformed

India on Friday criticized a derogatory remark describing the country as a “hellhole,” which was circulated by Donald Trump, saying the comment was “uninformed” and did not reflect reality.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the remark originated from US radio host Michael Savage and was later shared by Trump, drawing a formal response from New Delhi.

“We have seen the comments. Such remarks are uninformed and do not reflect the ground realities of India,” the MEA said in a statement, signaling a firm rejection of the characterization.

The response underscores India’s sensitivity to international narratives about the country, particularly when amplified by prominent political figures. Officials indicated that the statement was aimed at countering perceptions that could affect India’s global image.

The controversy emerged after the comment gained traction online following its circulation by Trump, prompting reactions across diplomatic and public spheres.

While India and the United States maintain broad strategic ties across defense, trade, and technology, episodes involving public remarks have occasionally triggered sharp responses from New Delhi.

No further escalation was immediately indicated, and there was no official response from Trump’s office following India’s statement.
