A 31-year-old man has been charged with attempting to assassinate Donald Trump after allegedly trying to open fire at a high-profile media gala in Washington, prosecutors said.
The accused, identified as Cole Allen, is alleged to have attempted to target Trump during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner held at a hotel in the US capital over the weekend.
According to prosecutors, Allen was armed with a pump-action shotgun, a semi-automatic pistol, and three knives when he attempted to breach security at the Washington Hilton, where the event was being held.
Officials said the suspect was stopped before he could enter the venue, preventing any casualties at the gathering attended by political figures, media personnel, and other guests.
Allen was charged in federal court on Monday with attempting to kill the president, along with two firearms-related offenses. He appeared in court wearing a blue jumpsuit but did not enter a plea.
The court ordered that he be detained pending further proceedings. If convicted, Allen could face a sentence of up to life imprisonment, according to prosecutors.
