Lucknow, May 13, KNT: Prateek Yadav, younger son of late Samajwadi Party founder and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, died in Lucknow on Wednesday at the age of 38, triggering shock across political and social circles in Uttar Pradesh.

Prateek Yadav, who largely stayed away from active politics despite belonging to one of the state’s most influential political families, was brought to Lucknow Civil Hospital in an unresponsive condition on Wednesday morning, where doctors declared him brought dead, according to hospital sources and media reports.

His sudden death initially led to speculation regarding the cause, with authorities ordering a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact medical reason behind the incident.

Subsequent reports citing postmortem findings stated that Prateek Yadav died due to a massive blood clot in the lungs, medically referred to as pulmonary embolism, which reportedly resulted in collapse of the heart and respiratory system.

Sources quoted in media reports said Prateek had been facing lung-related health complications for some time and had recently undergone treatment at a private medical facility before returning home.

The development has once again drawn public attention toward pulmonary embolism, a potentially fatal medical condition caused by blockage of arteries in the lungs, often linked to blood clots traveling from other parts of the body.

Prateek Yadav was the son of Mulayam Singh Yadav from his second marriage and the half-brother of Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

He was married to Aparna Yadav, who entered politics and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), becoming one of the prominent political faces linked to the influential Yadav family outside the Samajwadi Party fold.

Unlike several members of the Yadav family who remained directly active in electoral politics, Prateek maintained a relatively low political profile and was known more for his business and fitness interests.

Reports said he had studied at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom and later became associated with business ventures in Lucknow, including fitness and real-estate related activities.

He reportedly operated “The Fitness Planet,” a gym and wellness venture that gained visibility among fitness enthusiasts in the city.

Despite maintaining distance from formal politics, Prateek Yadav frequently remained in the public eye because of his association with the Mulayam Singh Yadav family and his marriage to Aparna Yadav.

His death led to an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, party workers and supporters across Uttar Pradesh, with several leaders expressing shock over his sudden demise at a relatively young age.

The incident also revived public focus on the internal political dynamics of the extended Yadav family, one of the most influential political families in north India for decades.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, who founded the Samajwadi Party and served multiple terms as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh as well as India’s Defence Minister, remained a towering political figure until his death in October 2022.

Prateek Yadav, however, was considered among the more private members of the family and was rarely seen making political statements or participating in public campaigns.

Some reports also mentioned that he had been facing financial stress linked to business setbacks in recent months, although no official statement has connected those developments with his medical condition or death.

Authorities have not indicated any foul play in the matter, and the available medical findings currently point toward pulmonary embolism as the likely cause of death.

Family members, political leaders and supporters gathered in Lucknow following news of his demise, while condolences continued pouring in from across party lines.  [KNT]
