The recent technical snag involving the Gulmarg Gondola should serve as more than a temporary news headline. It must become a wake-up call for authorities, engineers and tourism managers responsible for one of Kashmir’s most visited attractions. The Gondola is not merely a tourist ride. It is a symbol of Kashmir’s tourism industry and public confidence in its infrastructure.
The first lesson is that maintenance cannot be seasonal or reactive. Safety inspections must move beyond routine paperwork and become a transparent, technology-driven process. Independent technical audits, particularly before peak tourist seasons, should be mandatory. Sensors and real-time monitoring systems capable of detecting mechanical abnormalities before they become emergencies must be integrated into operations.
Second, weather assessment requires greater seriousness. Gulmarg’s high-altitude conditions are unpredictable, and decisions regarding suspension or continuation of operations should rely on scientific weather data rather than commercial pressure or crowd demand. Safety must always override revenue considerations.
Third, emergency preparedness needs visible strengthening. Every Gondola tower and station should have clearly rehearsed evacuation protocols, trained rescue teams and rapid-response equipment ready for deployment. Staff handling tourists must undergo regular crisis-management training so that panic does not compound technical problems.
Communication is equally critical. During emergencies, tourists and families often suffer more from uncertainty than delay. Authorities should maintain real-time public information systems through announcements, SMS alerts and social media updates to ensure transparency.
Finally, accountability matters. Every technical failure should trigger a professional review identifying causes and recommending reforms. Such findings should not remain buried in files.
Tourism survives on trust. Gulmarg’s beauty attracts visitors, but safety keeps them returning. Preventing future Gondola crises demands planning, professionalism and the willingness to learn before a malfunction turns into a tragedy.
