The United States military has carried out fresh strikes in southern Iran, targeting what American officials described as a military site posing a threat to U.S. forces and commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a U.S. official, the overnight operation targeted a ground control station near Bandar Abbas and included the interception and destruction of four Iranian one-way attack drones believed to be preparing for launch. The official described the operation as “measured” and “purely defensive.”

The latest military action comes amid fragile diplomatic efforts aimed at sustaining a ceasefire and reducing tensions that have persisted following months of confrontation involving the United States, Iran and regional actors.

American officials said the targeted facility near Bandar Abbas was being used as a drone control site and posed risks to both U.S. military assets and maritime traffic transiting the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Washington said the military also shot down four Iranian attack drones during the operation.

“These actions were measured, purely defensive and intended to maintain the ceasefire,” the U.S. official told Reuters while speaking on condition of anonymity.

The development follows earlier U.S. operations against Iranian missile sites and vessels suspected of threatening maritime security in Gulf waters. Iran has repeatedly condemned those strikes, describing them as violations of ceasefire understandings and sovereignty.

Iranian media and Revolutionary Guard-linked sources later reported retaliatory action against a U.S. airbase, warning that further military escalation would draw a stronger response. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said any continued “aggression” would carry consequences.

The renewed exchange has cast fresh uncertainty over diplomatic efforts linked to regional security and commercial navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy shipping corridors.

Oil markets reacted to the developments, with investors closely monitoring whether continued military exchanges could affect maritime movement and broader energy supplies.

The United States has maintained that its recent operations are intended to deter threats and protect maritime traffic while avoiding broader escalation.

The latest strike nevertheless underscores the fragile nature of the current ceasefire environment and the continuing volatility surrounding Gulf security.
