7,656 Rohingyas, 504 Bangladeshi Nationals Identified Across J&K: Govt Tells Demographic Panel

Jammu, Aug 19, KNT: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has informed the High-Level Committee on Demographic Change that 7,656 Rohingyas and 504 Bangladeshi nationals have been identified across the Union Territory’s 20 districts.
The data was shared with members of the committee during their field visit to Jammu, with officials also flagging security concerns over the presence of the foreign nationals, particularly in areas close to the borders.
Of the 7,656 Rohingyas identified across Jammu and Kashmir, 6,737 were recorded in the 10 districts of Jammu division, while 919 were identified across the 10 districts of Kashmir Valley.
The government data also showed that 46 Bangladeshi nationals had been identified in Jammu division, while 458 were recorded in Kashmir Valley, taking the total number across the Union Territory to 504.
Officials also shared details of cases registered in connection with the foreign nationals. In Jammu region, 101 cases were registered involving 179 men and 21 women.
In Kashmir Valley, 16 cases were registered involving 41 women and four men.
The figures were presented before the High-Level Committee on Demographic Change, constituted by the Centre to examine demographic changes, patterns of migration and related security management in border areas.
The committee’s field visit to Jammu comes amid heightened official focus on the identification of foreign nationals residing in the Union Territory and the implications of their presence, particularly in areas considered strategically sensitive. [KNT]
