The United States has suffered military casualties in its ongoing war with Iran, with the latest Pentagon figures confirming that at least 16 American service members have been killed since the conflict began earlier this year.
The latest losses occurred in Jordan, where two U.S. military personnel were killed and another was reported missing after an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack targeting American military facilities. Several other troops were also injured in the strike.
The deaths mark a significant escalation in a conflict that has largely been fought through long-range air strikes, missile attacks and drone warfare rather than large-scale ground combat. American forces stationed across Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq and other Gulf countries have remained vulnerable to Iranian retaliatory strikes.
According to U.S. officials, the war erupted following the collapse of diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear programme, leading to sustained military operations by the United States against Iranian military infrastructure. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. military installations and regional allies, widening the conflict across the Middle East.
Beyond the fatalities, the conflict has also resulted in a substantial number of wounded American personnel. Earlier in the war, Pentagon officials acknowledged that around 140 U.S. service members had been injured during the first phase of hostilities, although the majority later returned to active duty.
The continuing exchange of strikes has also inflicted heavy casualties inside Iran, with Iranian authorities reporting dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries from U.S. attacks. The renewed hostilities have further heightened concerns over regional stability, disrupted maritime traffic in the Gulf, and increased fears of a broader Middle East conflict.
The latest American casualties are expected to intensify political debate in Washington over the scope and duration of the military campaign, even as U.S. officials maintain that operations will continue until strategic objectives are achieved.
