Srinagar/Jammu, July 6, KNT: Amid the ongoing heatwave and soaring temperatures across Jammu and Kashmir, public resentment against the Power Development Department (PDD) continues to mount as unscheduled and prolonged power cuts persist in both the Kashmir and Jammu divisions, severely disrupting normal life.

A massive protest was held on Monday at Miran Sahib in Jammu, where scores of residents assembled with placards and raised slogans against the Power Development Department and the government over the worsening electricity crisis.

The protesters alleged that some localities are witnessing power outages lasting up to 18 hours a day, leaving residents to cope with the scorching heat without electricity.

“We receive electricity bills on time every month, but the department has failed to provide uninterrupted power. We are being asked to pay for a service that is hardly available,” the protesters said.

They said the prolonged outages have made life miserable, particularly for children, elderly persons and patients, as people are unable to sleep during the sweltering nights due to the absence of electricity.

Holding placards and chanting slogans, the protesters criticised the government for what they termed its failure to address the worsening power crisis despite repeated public complaints.

They demanded immediate intervention by the authorities to restore regular electricity supply and end the unscheduled power cuts that have added to the hardships caused by the prevailing heatwave.

Similar complaints of prolonged power outages have also been pouring in from several areas of the Kashmir Valley, where consumers have alleged erratic supply despite paying electricity charges regularly.

The protesters warned that if the power situation does not improve, they will intensify their agitation in the coming days. [KNT]
