‘A Meeting Is a Meeting’: Iltija Mufti Questions Omar Abdullah’s Pre-Emptive Statement on US Envoy
Srinagar, Aug 19, KNT: PDP leader Iltija Mufti on Wednesday questioned Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s decision to publicly state in advance that he would not raise Jammu and Kashmir’s issues with US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor during their scheduled meeting.
Reacting to Omar’s remarks, Iltija said she was yet to see an Indian Chief Minister appear so defensive about a routine diplomatic meeting.
“I am yet to see an Indian CM so apologetic about a simple meeting with the US Ambassador that he feels the need to announce beforehand what he will & won’t discuss. A meeting is a meeting. Why the public pre-emptive defensiveness?” she said.
Her remarks came after Omar said he would meet Gor but would not complain about Jammu and Kashmir’s problems to a representative of another country, maintaining that the solutions to the region’s issues lay with New Delhi and not Washington.
The exchange comes as Gor visits Jammu and Kashmir and is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister in Srinagar. [KNT]
