Baramulla, April 21, KNT: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Jammu and Kashmir, has filed a chargesheet before the Court of Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Baramulla, against Mubarak Ahmad Ganai, then Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) in the PWD (R&B) Division Sopore, in a case involving alleged demand and acceptance of illegal gratification.
According to the ACB, the case originated from a complaint by a contractor who alleged that the accused demanded a bribe at the rate of 2 percent for processing a pending bill amounting to ₹28.27 lakh related to the construction of a classroom lecture block at Government Degree College Sopore.
Following discreet verification, the allegations were substantiated, leading to the registration of a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and the laying of a trap.
Officials said that on October 16, 2024, the accused was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹25,000 from the complainant. The tainted amount was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses.
The investigation revealed that the accused, by virtue of his official position, had direct authority over the processing of the bill and had allegedly withheld it to extract illegal gratification from the contractor.
After completion of the investigation, the case was placed before the competent authority, which granted sanction for prosecution. Subsequently, the final report, or challan, was presented before the court.
The matter is now under judicial consideration, with the next hearing scheduled for June 6, 2026.
The ACB said it remains committed to ensuring accountability and taking legal action against misuse of public office. [KNT]
