BJP, NC members clash over Sheikh Abdullah birth anniversary holiday
Srinagar, Sep 22, KNT: BJP legislators on Tuesday walked out of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly after a National Conference member raised the demand for restoration of a public holiday on the birth anniversary of National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah.
The issue was raised by NC MLA Abdul Majid Larmi during the proceedings, triggering objections from BJP members, who raised slogans and opposed the demand.
BJP members also raised slogans in support of Maharaja Hari Singh during the exchange, while Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather intervened and asked members to maintain order.
The issue led to disruption of proceedings before BJP legislators walked out of the House.
The demand for restoration of Sheikh Abdullah’s birth anniversary as an official holiday has previously been raised by the NC. The holiday was dropped from the official calendar after the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir, while Maharaja Hari Singh’s birth anniversary was subsequently included as a public holiday.
The exchange came a day after the Assembly witnessed disruptions over issues including electricity tariffs, regularization of daily wagers and National Health Mission employees. [KNT]
