The ongoing war between Iran, Israel and the United States has taken a heavy personal toll on Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, with several members of his immediate family said to have been killed during the airstrikes that targeted Iranian leadership and strategic sites.

Reports emerging from Iranian media and international outlets suggest that Mojtaba Khamenei lost multiple close relatives in the attacks, including his father, mother, wife and one of his sons.

The deaths occurred during a series of coordinated airstrikes carried out by Israel and the United States targeting Iranian military installations and leadership compounds amid escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme.

Among those killed was Iran’s longtime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who died in a major strike on Tehran that targeted the country’s top leadership.
The attack marked one of the most dramatic developments in the conflict, as the killing of the country’s top religious and political authority triggered a rapid leadership transition in the Islamic Republic.

According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei’s wife Zahra Haddad-Adel was also killed in the strikes along with one of the couple’s sons.

Mojtaba Khamenei’s mother, Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, is also reported to have died during the bombardment, bringing the number of immediate family members killed to at least four.

The strikes were part of a broader military campaign launched by Israel and the United States targeting Iran’s nuclear infrastructure and key military installations.

The opening attacks reportedly hit compounds associated with Iran’s leadership in Tehran and other strategic locations across the country.

Some reports have also suggested that additional relatives of Mojtaba Khamenei may have been killed in the strikes, including a sister, nephew, niece and brother-in-law, though these claims remain unverified.

If confirmed, the number of family members lost by the new Supreme Leader could be higher.

The deaths underscore the human cost of the conflict that has escalated rapidly across the region over the past two weeks.

Iranian officials say the war has resulted in more than a thousand civilian deaths, while the United States and Israel claim the strikes were aimed primarily at military infrastructure and leadership targets.

Mojtaba Khamenei, who was widely seen as a possible successor to his father for years, was appointed Iran’s new Supreme Leader shortly after Ali Khamenei’s death.

The decision was made by the country’s Assembly of Experts, an influential clerical body responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader.

His elevation to the country’s highest authority came at a time when Iran was already under intense military pressure and facing one of the most serious crises in its modern history.

Observers say Mojtaba Khamenei had long been an influential figure within Iran’s power structure despite holding no formal government office.

He was believed to have close ties with the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and played an important role behind the scenes in shaping political and security decisions.

His rise to power signals continuity in Iran’s hardline political direction at a time when the country remains locked in confrontation with the United States and Israel.
Analysts say the loss of several family members during the conflict has also added a deeply personal dimension to the leadership transition.

Despite the leadership change, the war has continued with fresh airstrikes reported across Iran and missile launches targeting Israeli positions and regional infrastructure.

The conflict has also widened across the Middle East, raising fears of a broader regional escalation.

As the new Supreme Leader consolidates his authority, Iran faces a complex situation involving military pressure, internal political challenges and growing international scrutiny.

Observers say how Mojtaba Khamenei navigates the war and the aftermath of the strikes that killed several members of his own family may shape the future direction of Iran’s leadership and its relations with the outside world. [KNT]
