Beerwah, August 8, KNT: Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, on Friday called for a collective campaign against moral degradation, drug abuse and other social evils, saying every section of society has a responsibility to safeguard the moral fabric of the community.

Addressing a large Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid Beerwah in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, the Grand Mufti said religious scholars, families, educational institutions and society at large must work together to confront the growing challenges facing the younger generation. He maintained that remaining silent on issues affecting society would amount to shirking responsibility.

Referring to his earlier statements regarding the alleged sale of prohibited meat (pork) in Kashmir, Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam said fresh reports had reached him suggesting that such activities were continuing at a franchise outlet in the Lal Bazar area of Srinagar.

He urged the concerned authorities to verify the allegations and take appropriate legal action if any violation of the law is established.

The Grand Mufti reiterated that his intervention was guided by public concern and emphasized that issues affecting the moral and social well-being of society must be addressed without fear or favour. [KNT]
