Irrigation Failure Triggers Anxiety Among Farmers in Bijbehara Village
Bijbehara, May 31, KNT: A growing water crisis has left agricultural fields in Jablipora village of South Kashmir’s Bijbehara dry for the past eight days, triggering concern among farmers who fear damage to crops and serious losses to their livelihoods.
The situation has raised questions over the functioning of irrigation systems and implementation of water supply schemes, with cultivators alleging that the prolonged disruption has pushed farming activity toward uncertainty at a crucial stage of the agricultural season.
Local farmers said water has stopped flowing into the fields, leaving large patches of agricultural land parched and paddy cultivation under stress.
The disruption has caused anxiety among cultivators who depend heavily on timely irrigation to sustain crops and protect seasonal agricultural output.
Farmers alleged that irrigation mechanisms and related schemes have remained defunct, while authorities concerned have failed to restore water supply despite the worsening ground situation.
Some farmers accused the Public Health Engineering (PHE) authorities of remaining unresponsive as the crisis deepened.

“With every passing day, crops are drying and farmers are becoming more anxious. If water supply is not restored immediately, we may be staring at disaster,” a local farmer said.
The affected cultivators urged authorities to intervene urgently and restore irrigation facilities to prevent further agricultural losses and safeguard livelihoods dependent on farming.
The village, known for agriculture-based livelihoods, is now witnessing growing concern as farmers closely monitor their fields and await restoration of water supply. [KNT]
