IAS Officers Never Retire

Srinagar, Feb 17, KNT: Officers belonging to the prestigious Indian Administrative Service do not cease to be IAS officers in identity even after superannuation from active government service.

Under existing service rules, IAS officers attain superannuation upon reaching the prescribed age, after which they demit active office and regular cadre responsibilities. However, their service status as members of the prestigious All India Service remains intact. They continue to retain their rank, service identity, and are often referred to as IAS officers even after retirement from active duty.

Former IAS officers are frequently appointed to constitutional, statutory, advisory and regulatory positions by the Union or State governments owing to their administrative experience and institutional knowledge. Such post-superannuation assignments are common within the administrative framework of the country.
The Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha today appointed Shantmanu, IAS (Retd.), as the State Election Commissioner for the Union Territory of J&K.

“While the term “retired IAS officer” is used in official and public discourse to denote superannuation from active service, it does not imply the cessation of their association with the service cadre in terms of designation and recognition,” said a retired IAS officer.

The distinction is considered important in understanding government appointments, particularly when former civil servants are entrusted with key constitutional or administrative responsibilities after completing their tenure in active service. [KNT]
