At least 14 people have been killed and more than 80 injured after two trains collided near Indonesia’s capital Jakarta, with authorities confirming the toll rose following overnight rescue operations

The collision occurred late Monday in Bekasi, just outside Jakarta, when a long-distance train struck the rear of a commuter train at a station, officials said.

Authorities said the impact severely damaged a carriage reserved for women, with reports indicating that most of the fatalities were from that section.

More than 80 injured passengers were taken to hospitals, while rescue teams used specialized equipment to cut through mangled compartments to reach those trapped inside.

Preliminary findings suggest the commuter train had been halted due to an earlier incident near a railway crossing, before it was hit by the incoming long-distance service.

All passengers aboard the long-distance train were reported safe, officials said, even as emergency teams continued search and evacuation efforts through the night.

Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an investigation into the accident, acknowledging concerns over rail infrastructure and safety systems.

The crash has disrupted rail services in the Jakarta region, with authorities working to restore operations while probing the exact cause of the collision.

Experts have pointed to infrastructure gaps and the need for better separation of train operations as contributing risks in Indonesia’s busy rail network.
