Is West Bengal Witnessing a Maharashtra-Like Political Script?

Political developments unfolding in West Bengal have triggered comparisons with the dramatic events that reshaped Maharashtra politics in 2022, with observers pointing to a strikingly familiar theme: a rebellion from within a ruling party where dissidents are not seeking to leave the organization but are instead claiming to represent the “real” party.

The latest turmoil within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has centered around reports of a significant section of legislators backing a dissident camp that claims legitimacy within the party structure. While the situation remains fluid and its eventual outcome uncertain, the political vocabulary emerging from Bengal has revived memories of the Shiv Sena split led by Eknath Shinde.

In Maharashtra, the turning point was not merely that legislators rebelled against the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray. The defining feature of the crisis was the argument advanced by Shinde and his supporters that they represented the authentic Shiv Sena and were safeguarding its original political character.

That distinction transformed what initially appeared to be a routine rebellion into a battle for control of the party itself.

Political analysts note that a similar narrative is now being heard in West Bengal. Reports suggest that dissident legislators are not projecting themselves as defectors. Instead, they are presenting themselves as the legitimate voice of the Trinamool Congress.

The comparison becomes more significant because both situations involve powerful regional parties built around dominant political personalities.

In Maharashtra, the challenge was directed at Uddhav Thackeray. In West Bengal, any sustained rebellion inevitably raises questions about the authority of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, one of India’s most influential regional leaders.

Another similarity lies in the centrality of legislative numbers.

Modern political battles are increasingly being fought not through ideological disputes but through demonstrations of numerical strength inside legislative parties. The side that commands the support of a majority of elected representatives often gains a crucial advantage in shaping the political narrative.

The Bengal developments have therefore generated interest far beyond the state’s borders.

For national opposition politics, the Trinamool Congress occupies a position comparable in importance to that held by Shiv Sena in Maharashtra before its split. Any prolonged internal conflict could have implications extending beyond state politics.

The developments also highlight a broader transformation in Indian politics.

Historically, political defections involved leaders leaving parties and establishing new organizations. In recent years, however, several political crises have revolved around competing claims over who constitutes the legitimate party.

The battle is no longer merely about forming a new faction; it is about controlling the original political identity, organizational structure and electoral legacy.

Whether West Bengal ultimately follows Maharashtra’s trajectory remains uncertain. Much depends on the durability of the dissident camp, the response of the party leadership and the political developments that unfold in the coming weeks.

What is clear, however, is that the conversation has already shifted from individual defections to a larger and more consequential question: who can legitimately claim to represent the party itself.

That question transformed Maharashtra politics. It is now emerging as the central issue in West Bengal as well.
