New Delhi, August 4, KNT: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday called for greater autonomy for the Election Commission and the judiciary, saying democratic institutions should function independently and not remain dependent on the government of the day.
Speaking at the launch of the book “Vaiko in Parliament” in New Delhi, Abdullah said several mistakes had been made in the past regarding the functioning of key democratic institutions.
“Many mistakes have been made in the past. The Election Commission should have been made autonomous. It wasn’t done,” he said.
Referring to the judiciary, Abdullah said it remains the last institution where people seek relief and stressed the need to strengthen its independence.
“Judiciary, which is the last post where one can go to get relief, that needs to be thought about. We need to make it far more democratic, and not dependent on the government and the wishes of the government of the day,” he said.
Abdullah made the remarks while addressing the gathering during the release of the book on MDMK leader Vaiko’s parliamentary journey. [KNT]
