Srinagar, Oct 6: KNT: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded 756 road deaths up to mid-September this year, while 367 accident black spots have been identified across the Union Territory, prompting the administration to push for time-bound corrective measures and zero-casualty corridors.

The figures were reviewed during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo on Monday to assess the Road Safety Action Plan, accident trends, black-spot rectification, trauma care and enforcement measures.

According to the figures presented at the meeting, the number of road deaths has fallen from 1,090 in 2024 to 756 so far in 2026, while road accidents declined from 5,808 to 4,222 during the corresponding assessment period.

Of the 367 identified black spots, 165 have been audited by central agencies and 68 have so far been rectified. A road safety audit of 1,433 roads has also been completed, while Rs 11.60 crore has been released to 15 districts for immediate corrective measures under the Road Safety Fund.

The administration also reviewed trauma-care infrastructure, with audits completed for 15 Level-III Trauma Centres across J&K. A plan has been prepared for upgrading the facilities with additional manpower and equipment.

The Chief Secretary directed the concerned departments and road-owning agencies to accelerate corrective work at accident-prone locations and asked District Road Safety Committees to meet every month to monitor accident trends and address infrastructure deficiencies. [KNT]
