New Delhi, April 20, KNT: Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma of the Delhi High Court has recused herself from hearing a case related to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Naresh Balyan, amid political controversy and allegations of bias raised by the party.
The recusal comes against the backdrop of objections previously voiced by AAP leaders, who had questioned the judge’s impartiality, citing her alleged presence at events linked to right-wing organizations, including those associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The development follows earlier remarks by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had publicly sought the judge’s recusal in a separate matter, raising concerns over perceived bias.
The latest recusal adds a new dimension to the ongoing legal and political confrontation, highlighting tensions between the ruling party in Delhi and sections of the judiciary over issues of fairness and perception.
While the court did not specify reasons for the recusal, such withdrawals are typically undertaken to maintain judicial propriety and avoid any apprehension of bias.
The case involving Naresh Balyan will now be reassigned to another bench of the Delhi High Court for further proceedings.
The episode has intensified political debate, with the AAP maintaining that judicial processes must remain free from any perceived influence, while no official response has been issued from the court regarding the allegations.
The development underscores how legal proceedings involving political figures can quickly acquire wider significance when questions of neutrality and institutional trust are raised. [KNT]
