Srinagar, Apr 21, KNT: A private coaching institute in Srinagar has come under scrutiny after allegedly circulating a tampered scorecard claiming that one of its students secured 99.84 percentile in the Joint Entrance examination, while her verified percentile was found to be 73.2.

An investigation conducted by Kashmir News Trust found that the institute, operating under the name SKIE Classes, shared a PDF score sheet on social media through affiliated pages and influencers. The document reflected an inflated percentile and was widely circulated as a major academic achievement.

The discrepancy surfaced when users scanned the QR code embedded in the scorecard, which reportedly displayed the student’s original percentile as 73.2. The cut-off percentile required for qualification in the examination is understood to be significantly higher.

Education observers described the episode as a serious breach of trust, particularly at a time when coaching centres are actively seeking fresh admissions. Some experts said editing or circulating altered versions of official documents could amount to a punishable offence if established.

The student’s identity has been withheld. Sources said videos celebrating the alleged result were also recorded and circulated online, projecting the score as a landmark achievement.

Parents and educators expressed concern over verification standards and the role of social media amplification in spreading unverified claims. Calls have been made for authorities to examine the matter to determine whether any document manipulation or public misrepresentation took place.

When contacted by KNT, an official of the institute said they were informed by the student’s parents about an alleged discrepancy in the QR-linked result and claimed that an email from the National Testing Agency confirmed a 99.84 percentile. The official urged restraint in publication pending clarification and stated that the centre had initially received a screenshot and PDF reflecting the higher score.

The matter remains subject to verification from the concerned examination authority. [KNT]
